Mover Over Slim Jim, There's a New (Vegan!) Jerky in Town

Regardless of how you feel about mock meats, I'm sure many can agree that a vegan butcher shop is a step (or a leap and a chassé) in the right direction!  Whatever gets animals off of peoples' plates, right?  The Herbivorous Butcher recently opened its doors in Minneapolis, MN by a brother-sister duo and has attracted the attention of both herbivores and omnivores alike.

The Jerky Sampler (Fouders Kale and Aubry Walch shown above...adorable photo may I add.)

Being that I am not a Minnesotan, I was thrilled to find that they offered shipping of their vegan jerky sampler as well as their vegan starter kit.  I ordered the jerky sampler quicker than you can say "tofu" and eagerly awaited its arrival and oh what a joyous day that was!

The jerky sampler consisted of three flavors: Teriyaki, Sizzlin' Cajun and Salt N'Peppa.  All three are absolutely delicious, each variant is bursting with flavor.  You can literally taste how much effort they put in to crafting them.  The seasonings taste so fresh and vibrant. The jerky is on the thicker side which I like because you can really sink your teeth in and appreciate the full flavor profiles.

I also found the texture to be perfect; it is easy to bite in to and break apart.  The only other vegan jerky I've had was the Primal brand and although I do like and appreciate it (especially since they sell it in some airports, hello lifesaver!), I wish the consistency wasn't so tough, it is hard to tear apart.  I practically inhale the whole thing every time by accident...and if you're like me, there is no worse feeling than that final bite.  Here are the break downs of each flavor:

Teriyaki Jerky: I am not a fan of foods that are too sweet, especially ones that taste artificially sweet but there is no sign of that here!  It has the perfect balance of sweet and savory.  It also has a subtle smoky flavor that complements the sweet attributes nicely.  It is glazed to perfection!

Sizzlin' Cajun Jerky: Woo-doggy!  These puppies have some heat on them but it is delicious, flavorful heat; you can actually taste how well the spices come together as opposed to your mouth just being on fire.  The spicy rub on it gives it an extra one-two punch so I made sure to have a glass of water on standby.

Ingredients: Vital Wheat Gluten, Nutritional Yeast, Red Beet Powder, ground bay leaves, Salt, Garlic Powder, Chili Powder, Smoked Paprika, Cayenne Pepper, Onion Powder, Tomato Juice,Tomato Paste, Liquid Aminos,Canola Oil, Vegan Worcestershire Sauce, White Pepper, Black Pepper

Salt N'Peppa Jerky: I love that they were not shy with the amount of sea salt and cracked black pepper on top.  The taste is amazing.  They managed to use the ideal salt to pepper ratio to achieve perfect harmony. It is drier than the other ones and I would have to say it is the most savory one.

So if your mouth is watering now like mine is, check out their website  to get your hands on some jerky (or the vegan starter kit!).  The jerky sampler is $40 which includes shipping.  Each variety of the jerky comes in a 6oz package.  Upon opening each individual package, they recommend you consume it within 7 days but that wasn't an issue for me!  Enjoy! :)
